BIOFRAME

BIOFRAME

BIOFRAME is a European research and innovation project aiming to develop a practical, farmer-centred biosecurity improvement framework tailored specifically to non-intensive livestock farming systems, such as outdoor and extensive pig, poultry and ruminant farms. These systems provide clear animal welfare and environmental benefits but face increased risks of disease introduction due to outdoor access, wildlife contact and diverse management practices.

About BIOFRAME

Running for 36 months (2025–2028), BIOFRAME brings together researchers, farmers, veterinarians, advisors and policymakers from across Europe to co-design, test and refine biosecurity approaches that are realistic, effective and economically viable. The project combines stakeholder engagement, pilot farm studies, economic analysis and legislative review to ensure outcomes are both scientifically robust and practically applicable.

BIOFRAME is funded by the European Partnership on Animal Health & Welfare (EUP AH&W) and co-funded by the European Union and participating national funding organisations, including DEFRA in the UK.

Innovation for Agriculture leads the Dissemination and Knowledge Exchange work package (WP5) within BIOFRAME. IfA is responsible for ensuring that project findings, tools and recommendations are communicated clearly and effectively to farmers, advisors, veterinarians, policymakers and industry stakeholders.

This includes coordinating communication materials, organising workshops and events, supporting farmer engagement through IfA’s networks and demonstration farms, and translating research outputs into practical, farmer-friendly resources. IfA also contributes to stakeholder engagement activities and supports pilot farm work in the UK.

Why get involved?

BIOFRAME offers farmers and advisors the opportunity to help shape future biosecurity guidance that reflects the realities of non-intensive farming. By taking part, participants can contribute to the development of practical solutions that improve animal health and welfare, reduce disease risks and support the long-term resilience of their farming systems.

The project also provides early access to emerging tools, insights from pilot studies across Europe, and evidence on the economic impacts of biosecurity measures, helping farmers make informed decisions that balance health, welfare and profitability.

How farmers, advisors and stakeholders can get involved

There are several ways to engage with BIOFRAME, including:

  • Attending workshops, training sessions and knowledge exchange events organised through IfA.
  • Participating in stakeholder consultations, interviews or surveys
  • Engaging with pilot and demonstration farm activities where opportunities arise
  • Following project updates and contributing feedback as tools and frameworks are developed

Opportunities to get involved will be shared via IfA’s communication channels throughout the project.
