Explore multiple farms’ approaches to delivering food production, nature friendly farming and business profitability at the upcoming Farm of the Future study tour which takes place across Cumbria and Northumberland.
Join us on the Borders Farm Study tour for a series of visits to leading farms and see new technologies, innovations and approaches in action.
This two-day event will provide an opportunity to come together with a small group of farmers, step away from day-to-day farm challenges, discuss ideas and share reflections based on the visits.
On the first day the focus will be on managing upland farms in Cumbria to become resilient to climatic and economic changes. We will visit Low Beckside Farm to find out about their Countryside Stewardship agreement to restore peatland, which is already delivering encouraging results. The farm has also introduced rotational grazing across its beef and sheep enterprises, supporting forage mangement and farm resilience. We will also visit RSPB Haweswater, which is made up of two farms, to hear from their conservation grazing manager about how livestock managment, including destocking a valley, has enabled habitat restoration and landscape regeneration.
On day two we will visit sites in Northumberland, including Newcastle University's Nafferton Farm to explore some of the latest research in a range of agricultural sectors. There will also be a final visit to another commercial farm, exploring experiences and approaches to achieving economic resilience in a changing climatic environment.
